Our 2021 Impact

Join us in celebrating our 2021 impact!

2021 was another year filled with uncertainty and change for the world around us, and yet we are so proud to share how Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & SW Washington (RMHC) offered unwavering support, compassionate hospitality, and most of all – hope – to seriously ill or injured children and their families. Not only did we continue to deliver exceptional care and unparalleled comfort to our guests, but we also remained committed to our communities and to each other, recognizing now more than ever – we are better together. And together, we can provide life-changing support.

Over the past year, RMHC maintained a relentless dedication to our core mission, and the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night. Thanks to our staff, volunteers, partners, and donors, we proved time and time again that families traveling to receive critical medical care could count on us, no matter what.

Today, with immense gratitude, we celebrate everything we were able to accomplish together, and honor the community members who ensured that hope lives here.

The Families We Serve

When a family’s world is flipped upside down by a scary diagnosis or medical challenge for their child, and they find themselves needing to be far from home for treatment, RMHC provides so much more than access to medical care – we offer a community of support and loving home away from home to every family that needs it. Our four beautiful Oregon Houses welcome families traveling from all over the state, country, and world with seriously ill or injured children to receive lifesaving or life-changing medical care.

Families arrive at our doors for all kinds of reasons. From premature babies needing to grow, to chronic pediatric illnesses, to surprise cancer diagnoses, to accidents that happen in the blink of an eye, no family’s journey looks the same. But no matter the diagnosis, each family is treated with kindness, empathy, and respect. And most importantly, they are welcome here for as long as they need, completely free of charge.

In 2021, each of our Houses rose to meet the specific needs of families traveling to their community. Our Average Family Model highlights the variety of stories and journeys supported in each of our Houses last year.

My family would not have survived without this gift. As someone forced to surrender to the kindness of strangers, I never would have dreamed such a community would catch and lift me up. It is a debt I can never repay.

Our Programs and Services

Housing and Shelter

Providing crucial, free-of-charge housing to families traveling for pediatric medical care is the heart of our mission. At our four Oregon Ronald McDonald Houses, we are proud to offer this service at zero cost to families, lifting stressful financial burdens and providing a vital safety net when families need it most.

More than simply providing a roof over the heads of our guests, we believe in extraordinary hospitality and are proud to have demonstrated exceptional care throughout another year. We provided sparkling-clean rooms, well-stocked community spaces, and comfortable areas for all, and we are humbled to know that with every free night, we give respite and relief.

Meals from the Heart

Our Meals from the Heart program is a staple of the RMHC family experience, and we are proud of the many ways this program fills bellies, offers comfort, and removes major food burdens from the shoulders of our families. In 2021, we invested in ensuring that delicious, nutritious foods were accessible to families in a bigger way than ever before and were grateful for how our community joined us through in-kind donations, volunteerism, and monetary support. From Grab & Go breakfasts and fully stocked pantries, to homemade dinners made with love, our families never had to worry about where their next meal was coming from, and instead could focus on the health of their child.

Hospitality à la Carte

In March of 2021, our Hospitality à la Carte program was able to resume at Salem Health, and the families it served could not have been any more thrilled to have us back. After a long pause from passing out sweets, treats, games, and toys – we are back in action. Our cart travels to the Labor and Delivery floor, NICU, PICU, and Mother and Baby unit two days a week, providing much-needed comfort and care. The smiles it brings and the joy it provides remind us of the wonderful opportunity we have to serve those who need us most!

Family Survey Results

We are constantly seeking valuable feedback from our families to improve the overall guest family experience and better meet the needs of those who walk through our doors. This information plays a critical role in understanding how, and if, we were meeting the changing needs of the families we serve. We are proud to say that our guest families reported consistently excellent experiences in all four of our Houses. This means we are succeeding in what matters most – providing comfort for families in need.

Because of You

Looking back at 2021, we at RMHC are struck by everything that made last year extraordinary. Across the state, our communities rose to each occasion with compassion and generosity. As we navigated towards a “new normal,” donning masks and social distancing, we saw the power of our communities and are humbled by what you all made possible for the thousands of families who travelled to receive lifesaving and life-changing medical care for their child.

Because of you, we remained full of hope throughout yet another year defined by the pandemic. Your support allowed us to safely welcome families into our beautiful common spaces, where connection, inspiration, and love transcended. Your support allowed us to serve more comforting meals, filling bellies with nutritious, delicious nourishment. And your support helped us implement innovative family-centered programming and services, offering bright spots in the days of children and families when they needed it most. With immense gratitude, we celebrate the role you played in 2021 by ensuring that hope for tomorrow can begin here today.

Stay tuned for our 2021 Finance Report, coming in later this year, sharing the financial health RMHC and how your investment in our programs impacts and improves the lives of families with seriously ill children.

Excellent People Make Excellence Happen
We are inspired, grateful, and amazed each day as RMHC staff make our four Houses feel like home for every person who walks through our doors. The extraordinary people of our organization hold themselves and each other accountable to the highest standards in how we serve our families and steward our resources, and they choose to collaborate to achieve excellence together. Throughout 2021, RMHC staff members across the state proved that no matter the circumstance, excellent people make excellence happen.

In 2021, RMHC was proud to be named in the top 100 non-profits to work for in Oregon for the 13th year running.

Our 2021 Finances

Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family needs to focus on the health of their child – not where they will get their next meal, nor where they will lay their head at night to rest. Families are invited to stay at our Houses for free, removing a major barrier for those who struggle to find alternative housing.

It isn’t possible to quantify the gift that is RMHC because it comes in so many forms, at so many times, in so many ways. At my loneliest moments, RMHC reminded me that I wasn’t alone.
